As a society we do not value our bodies enough, we do not appreciate what they do for us. This vehicle in which we travel needs to be treated with loving-kindness in order to continue on our life journey without breaking down.
As a middle-aged mum of three children, I had already experienced a few road blocks and was not taking enough care of my body. I realized that if I wanted to age gracefully and happily I had to make some changes.
I was overweight, experiencing back, neck, wrist and shoulder pain on a daily basis, my posture was terrible and I was generally unhappy with many aspects of my life.
I had dreamed of being in the health and wellbeing industry however that little niggling voice inside my head kept telling me that I couldn’t do it. You know the one, the one that gives you a million excuses as to why you can’t follow your dreams. However somehow I overcame that negativity and began a get fit program including more yoga. Eventually completing my yoga teacher training as part of this journey.
Yoga taught me how to deal with stress in my life. It helped me lose weight and build muscles. It has increased my flexibility and improved my posture, thereby minimising aches and pains in my body. It is amazing how different I feel, I am calmer, happier and feel as if I have connected to my true nature. Being a yoga teacher feels like what I am meant to be doing, I genuinely love helping others to rediscover the connection between their mind, body and breath so that they are more mindful of the way they are moving through their day to day life.
Yoga helps people to honour and respect their bodies, to feel good about themselves and to appreciate and love what they have. It empowers people to have a fuller range of movement, more flexibility and strength as they age. It is different to other forms of exercise as it teaches mindfulness which translates into every aspect of your life. I believe yoga can be used as therapy to assist with a broad range of physical and emotional matters, as I know how much it has helped me.
